The Missouri Botanical Garden is world-renowned for its beautiful flora and vast variety of plant species. During their sesquicentennial year, they are demonstrating how being “green” is more than just making plants grow.
As part of their 150th anniversary celebration, a fully mechanized floral clock was installed in the center of the Garden near the reflecting pools. To offset the energy used by the new clock, the Garden commissioned the installation of an 800W solar PV system on the roof of a trellis in the Kemper Center for Home Gardening.

Many energy-saving ideas have already been implemented, including efficient florescent and LED lighting, reflecting their commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle. The new solar panels are tied into the Garden’s electrical grid to quietly supply additional energy from a clean, renewable source. A computer inside Kemper Center is designed to show visitors the solar power production using a wireless internet connection.Eventually an outdoor kiosk will be used to provide the same information right at the source.
Be sure to visit the Missouri Botanical Garden during their 150th anniversary year to see the spectacular floral clock and all of the many other treasures inside their walls.
